
What do we mean by "diversity"?
Diversity refers to the variety of personal experiences, values, and worldviews that arise from differences of culture and circumstance. Such differences include race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, language, abilities/disabilities, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic status, and geographic region, and more. (University of California Diversity Statement, September 15, 2010)
- Residency program - 65% of our residents are from groups underrepresented in medicine.
- PRIME-US - The department administers the Program in Medical Education for the Urban Underserved. A special five-year track, PRIME-US brings together a diverse group of medical students committed to improving all aspects of the health of the underserved.
- Model SFGH - The department oversees a structured program with a focus on care of underserved populations in which third-year medical students complete Family & Community Medicine, Medicine, and either Pediatrics or Obstetrics/ Gynecology clerkships at San Francisco's safety net medical center, San Francisco General Hospital.
- Provide lectures & courses for students, residents and post-docs in cultural humility, cultural competency, community-oriented primary care
- Lead community tours for residents and students to learn about SF's diverse communities and to introduce them to the CBOs that serve them
- Faculty volunteer as preceptors at student-run clinics focused on serving disadvantaged/ low income minorities, such as Clínica Martín Baró and Mabuhay Health Center
- Mentoring programs for residents, students and faculty
