Elective Clerkships The Department of Family and Community Medicine offers a variety of electives for visiting students. The following listing of electives is arranged by geographic site. Please contact the scheduler listed for further information and availability.
San Francisco/Bay Area Electives FCM 140.40: Family Practice Advanced Inpatient Clerkship The Family Practice Inpatient Service at San Francisco General Hospital employs the family practice approach to hospitalized adult patients with diverse medical problems. Students function as members of the multidisciplinary inpatient team at a junior intern level. Attending rounds are held daily. For UCSF students meets graduation requirements for Medicine Sub-I APPLICATION & HOUSING: Students should apply at least four months in advance. Students must find their own housing. Scheduler:
Electives at Affiliated Sites FCM 140.52: Rural Family Practice, Selma Primary care experience at the Selma Community Health Center, a training site for Family Practice residents. Situated in an agricultural community south of Fresno, this ambulatory practice includes pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and chronic diseases. Patient rounds, deliveries and emergency room experience provided at adjoining modern rural hospitals. Exposure to rural private family practice available. APPLICATION & HOUSING: Students should apply at least six months in advance. Housing is provided free of charge. Scheduler:
FCM 140.53: Inpatient Medicine/Family Practice - UCSF, Fresno Fresno offers a variety of FCM electives. Training sites include Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) – a regional academic medical center with the only Burn and Level I Trauma center between Los Angeles and Sacramento. CRMC’s 56,000 square-foot emergency department is the largest in the state. CRMC is the major teaching hospital for the UCSF Fresno residency training programs, serving a population of more than 800,000 people in Fresno County. Training also takes place at the Central Valley Family Health Center, training site for Family Medicine residents. Situated in an agricultural community south of Fresno, this ambulatory practice includes pediatrics, obstetrics, gynecology and chronic diseases. Patient rounds, deliveries and emergency room experience are provided at Selma Community Hospital a modern rural hospital adjacent to the Health Center. Exposure to rural private family medicine is available. The UCSF Fresno Center for Medical Education and Research is located directly adjacent to Community Regional Medical Center and is a part of Community Medical Center’s regional academic campus.
