Introduction

Students work with family physician preceptors in the clinical setting of their choice outside of UCSF. In the past, students have chosen a diverse array of experiences, including public and private clinics in urban, suburban, and rural settings across the United States and Canada. Students may select sites that will allow them to experience the full scope of family medicine outside of a university setting, or they may choose to focus on a special interest within family medicine, such as maternal and child health, sports medicine, adolescent medicine, geriatrics, integrative medicine, or underserved populations. Many students have used this experience to explore family medicine as practiced in public health settings such as the Indian Health Service.

Trip Reports from students who have done this elective in the past are available for review in the office of Roy Johnston. However, students choose to enroll in this elective are responsible for making their own arrangements with the site where they wish to do the elective.

For students who wish to do an elective with the Indian Health Service, it is crucial to make arrangements as early as possible, often one year in advance. The most popular locations for UCSF students have been New Mexico, Arizona, California, Montana, and Alaska. Please refer to the Indian Health Service Web Page: http://www.ihs.gov/

Elective Course Credit

The only way to obtain credit for an FCM elective is by securing faculty approval to take the course at least one month before the start of the course. Course credit cannot be arranged after the fact. Credit is pass/fail.

Contact Roy Johnston to tell him of your plans to do the elective and to secure the necessary forms. Students must complete departmental forms, an Off-campus Elective form and register for the course appropriately.

In order for the department to have accurate information about your plans and the elective itself, you will need to provide the faculty of record, Michael Potter, MD, with a memorandum with the following information:

  • FCM course title and number
  • Inclusive dates
  • Site where the elective will take place (including address)
  • Preceptor (including email and mailing address)
  • Course goal(s) from your perspective
  • Course objectives: What clinical experiences are you seeking? How will these experiences complement the training you have had so far as a physician? How do you think these experiences will influence your future career development?
  • Course activities: What will you actually do during the elective? What patient population will you be working with? How many hours per week do you expect to spend in each of the various clinical activities you have selected?
  • Two weeks after completing the elective, you will provide Dr. Potter and the Department of FCM with the following:
    • Self-evaluation form
    • Evaluation form completed by your preceptor
    • Trip Report describing your activities and completed objectives

Send memo and report to:
Michael Potter, MD (with a copy to Roy Johnston)
