The UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine has, since 1998,
offered two-year or three-year full time fellowships for individuals
wishing to prepare for careers that will include research in the field
of Family Medicine. The fellowship program is intended mainly for residency-trained
family physicians, although other primary care physicians and PhD’s
interested in family medicine research may also be considered.
Didactic opportunities for fellows include the nationally known TICR
(Training in Clinical Research) Program that serves over 100 fellows
and junior faculty from various health science disciplines at UCSF each
year. A wide variety of formal academic training opportunities are available,
and fellows have the option of completing an MPH degree at the nearby
University of California at Berkeley School of Public Health or a Masters
of Science in Clinical Research degree at UCSF.
UCSF has one of the top academic departments of family medicine in the
country with a very strong research program.
A number of primary care-oriented research centers and interest groups
are available at UCSF and surrounding institutions that welcome fellows'
participation. Family Medicine at UCSF & Stanford jointly sponsor
one of the largest practice-based research networks in the country.
Clinical responsibilities for fellows are limited to two half-days per
week in an outpatient setting. Fellows who so desire have the option
of involvement in teaching medical students and residents, but they
are discouraged from doing so to an extent that might interfere with
their full dedication to research activities. Salaries are based on
PGY level and match those for other fellows at UCSF. Benefits include
health insurance, paid vacation and sick time, and sponsorship
to attend research conferences.
This research fellowship offers a unique opportunity to a recent family medicine graduate. The department has many established researchers and is located in one of the world's premier academic medical centers. The department's research strengths include care of chronic disease, disease prevention, health services research (workforce and access to care), practice-based research, HIV/AIDS, and international health. A masters degree in clinical research or an MPH at nearby UC Berkeley is optional.
