Wolf Mehling, MD

| 12 years of private practice in midsize inner city in Germany combining primary care with referrals for manual medicine and psychotherapy. President of physicians' association for manual medicine in my state and member of the state board for manual medicine in Germany. Longtime interest and training in body-work techniques and body-oriented psychotherapy and their application in (chronic) musculoskeletal pain problems. Used two-year research fellowship to conduct (1) a randomized controlled clinical trial on a hands-on mind-body therapy for patients with chronic low back pain and (2) a secondary data analysis on difficulties identifying emotions and their relation to the prevalence of back pain in public transit drivers in San Francisco. Currently on faculty as assistant clinical professor both in the Department of Family and Community Medicine and at the Osher Center for Integrative Medicine at UCSF. 60% of my time is committed to research, completing the research started as a fellow. Also, I am currently involved in a NIH planning grant for international cooperation on a major research project on Yoga and cooperate with scholars from India. I applied for a NIH career award to conduct research that could lead to a clinical prediction tool for early identification of patients with acute low back pain likely going on to chronic pain. This would provide a tool for future research of complementary therapies in the secondary prevention of chronic low back pain. |
